AVON Snap Fitness News from Michele

Snap Fitness Avon Club Update!

Welcome to February! January 4th marked 2 years of my ownership of Snap Avon and I am proud to say that we finished the month with a record number of new memberships. I couldn't be more proud that many familiar faces from the past came back and re-joined us...or as I say, "Came back home." I have decided to take on a more active role at the club along with my new partner, Vassilios, whom many of you have already met. Vassilios (or just "V") brings an extensive history of martial arts knowledge and training along with a creative background as a professional musician and business manager. Vassilios and I, along with our elite personal training staff, hope to continue the momentum of January's success with the launch of new classes, programs, workshops, and so much more.
Interested in joining? Come in during our staffed hours as follows: Monday-Thursday 10am - 6pm, Friday 10am - 3pm, Saturday 9am - 1pm, *or by appointment
FREE ENROLLMENT for all past members who re-join by February 28th! We miss you!

DRIVEN Launches March 3rd

"Surpassing boundaries is what we do and who we are at Snap Fitness Avon."
Have you wondered what you could accomplish with your health and fitness if you had the right tools and expertise at hand? Do you want to know what you are capable of? SO DO I. Introducing the new Michele Approved DRIVEN Program at Snap Fitness Avon beginning March 3rd!
As many of you know I am a 15 year veteran as a 3x professional physique athlete, fitness competition coach, stage posing choreographer, personal trainer, and nutrition consultant. Some might remember seeing me prepare for competitions and I'll never forget the time our former staff member (and now head college field hockey coach) Jessica Bergen created the "Good Luck" video compilation of Snap Members wishing me luck on the Pro World stage in Toronto, ON (see link below). Many asked me how I transformed my body naturally, how I was able to push myself with such intensity at every workout, and WHY I did it. The answer is simple: PASSION. For the first time I am taking my passion for doing the impossible and implementing an exclusive program at Snap Avon designed for men and women of all ages wanting to find out what they are capable of.
The Michele Approved DRIVEN Program is an ongoing monthly program with three enrollment options based on your level of commitment (enroll any time!). At the minimum plan to attend targeted classes 3x a week, monthly fitness challenges for prizes, and monthly goal tracking via body measurements. For those who choose the "Ultimate Change Program" you will receive 2 personal training sessions with me in addition to all the other extra components. Do the work; stay committed; see the results.
Call or stop by the club for complete details and to enroll today.

The Snap Fitness/Michele ApprovedTM Grocery List Launches Version #2 at Canton ShopRite Supermarket!

After four hours of set-up and about 200 shelf tags later the second version of the Michele ApprovedTM grocery list launched this past weekend at ShopRite supermarket in Canton.  The original list launched a few months ago and caused quite a stir in the community since no one has ever seen anything like it before.  A stanchion sign with Michele's picture, information, and a description of her collaboration with ShopRite supermarket greets you.  The opposite side of the stanchion sign is an enlarged directory of the custom grocery list that is categorized by food group and aisle location.  Individual handouts of the grocery list are also at the door for shoppers to grab and use throughout the store where custom shelf tags help identify all the products on the list.

Version two of the Michele ApprovedTM Snap Fitness grocery list includes an updated "look" along with many new and exciting additions to the grocery list.  Some of Michele's favorite new items on her list are in a new section called "Featured Super Foods."  Michele and one of her elite staff of personal trainers, Robert Smith Jr., will be performing in-store demonstrations on featured products on the new list that might be unfamiliar to many of the public.  Upcoming in-store demonstrations will be on the following days and times:

November 9th from 2-5pm: Kale Chips
November 15th from 4-7pm: Go Raw Brand Super Food Snacks
November 19th from 2-5pm: Pumpkin
November 26th from 2-5pm: Chia Seeds
December 6th from 4-7pm:  Ezekiel Bread/Tortillas
December 14th from 2-5pm:  Lentils
December 21st from 2-5pm:  Amaranth
December 31st from 2-5pm:  Sweet potatoes
January 4rd 2014 from 2-5pm:  Quinoa

Please join us in the store at any of our demonstrations!  Stay tuned for more in store presence as Michele will be hosting some upcoming meet-and-greets so people can learn more about the WHY behind the creation of the list.  Let us know what you think of the list by posting on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/snapfitnessavonct -- and be sure to "LIKE" and follow ShopRite on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/josephfamilymarkets) as well!

HBO Weight of the Nation Clip 7: Are All Calories Created Equal?

It is great to be aware of the calorie-content of your food, but don't make calories your primary focus in weight loss.  While portion control is important (KNOW YOUR SERVING SIZES), your focus should be on fueling your body with the things that it NEEDS to function.  Skip the saturated fats; stick with the unsaturated guys.  Try to get enough protein, and always, always, always eat lots of vegetables and fruits!!

HBO Weight of the Nation Clip 5: Healthcare Costs are Greatly Impacted by Obesity

This is not good news for ANYONE.  This is why small businesses can no longer afford to offer health insurance benefits to their employees.  Perhaps free gym memberships and a certain number of personal training sessions should be free through health insurance agencies as a preventative cost.  Maybe even a monthly visit to a dietician or nutritionist should be included to help people understand what healthy eating is, how to read food labels, and what to look for in the grocery store.  It's a small step but it could have a great impact on our obesity crisis.  After all, the healthier your employees are, the more productive.  And the fewer sick days they take!

Living With Type 2 Diabetes Program May eNewsletter

Here is some information from the American Diabetes Association on Living with Type 2 Diabetes!

Living With Type 2 Diabetes
Dear Living With Type 2 Diabetes Program Member,
Did you know that people with diabetes are at greater risk for depression?  Everyone feels down every once in awhile.  But feelings of sadness that just won't go away could be a sign of serious depression.

Below are some common signs of depression.  If you think you have depression, it's important to talk with your healthcare provider.

Symptoms of Depression
  • Loss of pleasure – You no longer take interest in doing things you used to enjoy.
  • Change in sleep patterns – You have trouble falling asleep, you wake often during the night, or you want to sleep more than usual, including during the day.
  • Early to rise – You wake up earlier than usual and cannot to get back to sleep.
  • Change in appetite – You eat more or less than you used to, resulting in a quick weight gain or weight loss.
  • Trouble concentrating – You can't watch a TV program or read an article because other thoughts or feelings get in the way.
  • Loss of energy – You feel tired all the time.
  • Nervousness - You always feel so anxious you can't sit still.
  • Guilt – You feel you "never do anything right" and worry that you are a burden to others.
  • Morning sadness – You feel worse in the morning than you do the rest of the day.
  • Suicidal thoughts – You feel you want to die or are thinking about ways to hurt yourself.

72nd ADA Scientific Sessions
Liberty Bell, PhiladelphiaNext month, more than 13,000 of the world's leading diabetes experts will gather in Philadelphia for the 72nd ADA Scientific Sessions.

This world-class event brings together leading-edge scientists and healthcare providers to share updates in the latest research and insights into diabetes health care. The goal: To Stop Diabetes®.

The media attention this event receives will help put diabetes at the forefront of the national conversation, while giving researchers an opportunity to network and learn of new advances.

It also connects healthcare providers with their colleagues to share best practices in diabetes healthcare.

"I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the end of September 2011.  I felt very alone, afraid – overwhelmed.  I immediately looked everywhere for support.  I joined the message boards on the ADA website where I read other people's stories and how they too were coping and learning to live with it.

I didn't feel a lot of support from my healthcare provider so I knew I was going to have to be very active in getting my diabetes under control.  It's been six months and my blood sugars have come down quite a bit, I go to the gym and enjoy it and I don't have to go back to the doctor for six months.  So all in all I must be doing something right!  Thank you to all the people who supported me on the ADA website, their knowledge has been invaluable to me.

Diabetes Talk

talkSo I was just diagnosed type 2 on April 18th. Ugh. I am still so freaked out. I go to a dietician this week and I cannot wait. I need to learn what I can eat. Right now I am just having egg whites for breakfast, a string cheese for snack, a salad and some chicken for lunch, a pickle for snack and then salad and chicken for dinner. I have already lost 6 lbs since last week. Boy this is hard.
