It’s now October, and I’ve been working with Ed Garbin since July. A lot can be said about Ed; He’s dedicated, he gets results, and he genuinely cares about where your goals are and the best way to see you get there.
I started out just like everyone else; thinking that you knew what “getting in shape” meant. You showed up, lifted some weight, and saw results. I couldn’t believe how wrong I was. Ed worked with me twice a week and put me through his High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. This training targets every muscle; every part of you is put through a rigorous workout that resets your mind just as much as it retrains your muscles.
I could go on about the fact that I lost a third of my body fat through a combination of Ed’s training and eating correctly. I could state that in only three months I increased my muscle mass by 20 pounds. But the greatest transformation came from what I thought I knew about working out.
One time, Ed and I were doing pull-ups. I remember being able to do 10 unassisted pull-ups about 15 years ago. Now, I can only do 10 with an assisted push. I remembering telling Ed that I felt like a failure for not being able to be perform like I used to. Ed looked me right in the eye and said to me that the point of this is to fail. It doesn’t matter if I fail using assisted weights or unassisted. The goal is to fail. The goal is to push yourself until you can’t push anymore.
Ed showed me in those few words a new way to look at everything. For me the message is simple: Failure is not an option… Failure is the only option. To fail means you’ve given everything you have and then dig deep for some more. Ed pushed me to reach that point, and continues to do so each and every time.
