Michele's Weekly Club News and THANK YOU - July 3, 2013

HELLLOO to the most amazing group of members in the Farmington Valley!

****I'd like to start off this week's club email with a GIANT THANK YOU to all of you for the incredible amount of support for me both leading up to my Pro Figure show at the Fitness Universe competition in Miami (400 athletes from around the world) and on the show day itself.  I placed in the top five (4th place) this weekend and will be sharing pictures when they are available so be sure to "like' our Facebook page.  Below are two videos showing just how much support there is at Snap Fitness in Avon.

The first is the GOOD LUCK VIDEO created by Jessica Bergen compiling a bunch of well wishes from many of the membership.  You can watch it here:

The second is another video created by Jessica and Katey at the club "viewing party" that went on while everyone watched me live on stage in Miami

I'm eternally grateful for all the support and I can truly say when anyone asks, "What makes Snap Fitness different?"  I'm going to say --- EVERYTHING.  There will never be another gym like it.  It's the staff and the members that are unlike any other.

Now for a few club announcements:

1. In observance of the 4th of July holiday, there will be NO STAFFED HOURS either Thursday or Friday this week.  Regular staffed hours will resume 9-1pm on Saturday. As always, members have access to the club with their keycards EVERY DAY from 5AM – Midnight, so you can still get your workouts in while we are away!

2. Please bring a change of shoes....all the rain and the mud is hard to keep out of the club otherwise.  And please be sure to rack the weights as well.  Snap isn't just my club; it's YOURS too so let's all do our part to keep it CLEAN.

3. Jessica wrote an incredible blog post about reframing your thoughts that I wanted to share with all of you. You can check it out here:

4. Brian's Challenge is coming into the final few weeks.  Team 4 is still in the lead! Way to go guys!!

5. Boot Camp Class is still ON for Friday at 6 AM, so you don’t have to feel guilty about eating that hot dog! J

All for now --- ENJOY YOUR 4TH and be safe out there!  Don't forget to come in and sweat out some of that BBQ this weekend!!

Sincerely,

After years of sitting around the house all morning doing nothing waiting to go in to work, I figured it was time for a change.  The sedentary life style of sitting on the couch eating and watching sports center had ballooned me to over 260lbs.  I was definitely not where I wanted to be in life, so in February of 2012 I began looking for a gym; that way I would at least have something to keep me occupied for a while in the morning and could start getting myself into better shape.
What started off as just something to keep me busy for a while became a full blown addiction when after the first couple weeks I had dropped 10 lbs.  I started to go more and more often (now anywhere between 4-6 times a week), and began to fine tune my work out routine (mostly cardio, with some circuit to maintain some muscle mass), while keeping an eye on what I was eating.

Originally I had no goal set in mind, I just wanted to feel better about myself, but that was short lived. My first goal was to get down to 220 lbs, which came and passed relatively quickly.  After that I continued to set goals, and the weight just continued to melt away.  I figured a plateau would come and that would be my limit.  Well here we are less than 1 year later and I have finally reached that plateau.  I’ve lost over 100lbs and couldn’t feel better about myself.

217lbs.  That was when it hit me.  I was in my senior year of high school, and I knew there was something wrong.  I should not be this heavy.  I had never exercised a day in my life and I was a ticking time bomb.  I then vowed that when I graduated high school I would lose the weight no matter what it took.
Between 2008 and 2013, 22-year old Josh lost 65 pounds!!
For the first two years, I changed what I ate.  I no longer reached for the processed foods, junk food, or the pint of Ben & Jerry’s.  All of these bad foods I slowly replaced with healthy food.  I began to experiment with vegetables and fruits and found that I like most of them.  They were not as repugnant and repulsive as my mind had made them out to be. By doing this small change, I began to lose some of the weight and notice a change in me.  I had more energy to power through the day.

After the two years, I decided it was time to confront my fear and go to a local gym.  I started working out 5 days per week and did an hour of cardio.  I would wake up at 5:00am and head straight to the gym.  Yet again, I noticed an amazing change in me.  I had even more energy and I felt so much better about myself.  I also began to lose my hunger cravings and was no longer eating the enormous portions I had before; I even stopped having seconds.  It was truly miraculous.  One morning I stepped on the scale and it read 152lbs.  I was flabbergasted and I was pretty sure that my scale was lying to me.  I couldn’t believe how much weight I had lost over the four years, even thought I had lost my way a few times.

All it took was sheer determination, motivation, and the desire to better myself.  I wanted to live a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to be around for as long as possible so I could be there for the ones I loved.  I still struggle to this day, but whenever I fall off track, I don’t wallow in self-pity or mourn the fact that I took a small detour.  I get right back on track and keep plugging along!

January 14, 2013 – Barry W.
I started realizing that I was living a pretty unhealthy lifestyle when I found out I was going to be dad in 2010.  I had gained 20 lbs in 2 years mainly from poor eating habits, no self discipline, and overall just tired from working so much.  I decided in September of 2010 to take one thing at a time and quit smoking; I had already prepared for the weight gain which is common when you do quit.  Then in November 2010 I was injured at work.  I was then stuck at a desk, and I started packing on the pounds.  I began eating even more unhealthily, and became more sedentary than before.  By January 2011 I had gone from 235lbs to 272lbs.  I decided that I needed to do something.

At that time my employer came up with a weight loss challenge, and that was when I joined Snap.  I started trying to eat healthier, but not completely cutting out everyday foods.  I slowly decreased the amount I ate, and added the right foods in.  I began using the elliptical, as I couldn't lift any weight due to my injury.  I figured something was better then nothing.  In the 60 day challenge I lost 24 lbs.  I had my surgery, did my rehab, and wasn't really cleared to start lifting weights until May of 2011.  Then I took off from there, trying to get to gym everyday; this was what I liked about Snap.  Its convenient hours allowed me to go pretty much anytime I wanted, and worked around my ever changing schedule.  It is small and I like it that way.  Everyone here has the same goal, and I have seen a lot of other members’ transformations since I’ve been here.  Now I am down to 208, and continue to make more improvements everyday.  It certainly has been a challenge, but having SNAP has definitely made my goals easier to achieve.
