Mike's Video of the Week - April 20, 2012

If anyone has been following our Lose Weight Challenge, then they know that Carly ruled the first 4 weeks of the Challenge, back in March.  She was coming into the club twice a day, morning and night.  She'd participate in Boot Camps, and joined the club team at the Hartford 5K on St. Patrick's Day weekend.  She was owning her weight loss.  Recently, she was dethroned by another girl, and Carly was not happy.  She is highly competitive and HATES being stuck at #2.

Because Carly has a very specific goal in mind, and wants to continue to lose weight, she has opted to start participating in one-on-one personal training with Mike Josephson, a NASM certified personal trainer here at Snap.  She's highly motivated and ready to work.  You'll have to check back in after April 30th to see how she does!  In the meantime, enjoy this video of one of Carly's workouts with Mike.  Hopefully it'll inspire you to go after your dreams, and improve your health and fitness.
Interested in Mike's use of the unstable surface of the BOSU ball here in this workout?  Ask him why he chose this type of training for Carly the next time you see him in the club, and see if he can come up with something for you!

Sports Team Training: The Simsbury Lightning

We have been given the unique and fun opportunity to train some local youth sport teams.  One such team is the "Simsbury Lightning" youth soccer team.  These are ladies ages 13-14, and they travel to compete against other teams in the Farmington Valley.  Every Monday and Thursday, they will be training with Mike and/or Brian (I got to sub in once this week and LOVED it, they're so cute) for a full 45-minutes.

Mike's first day with them was a lot body weight stuff, and they were lucky enough to have that AMAZING 60-70 degree weather, so they trained outside on the grass.  The photos below are from Brian's first session with them - also outside, on that dreadful 80 degree day last week!!  They were outside to do some hill sprint relays, and some 40-yard relays, before going back inside to finish some strength training circuits in the air conditioning!!

Check out the photos below, and a little compilation video at the bottom!

Time for some hill-sprint relays!

Instructions before they get "racing"!!

Splitting up into two teams!

And they're off and running!!

Make sure you touch the cone!!!

Smiling while they work, how great!!

Personal Training Success Story: Kelly Mazzola

"Training with Mike has helped me realize that I'm a lot stronger than I thought.  His motivational approach and positive attitude helped me break through a lot of what I previously thought I 'just couldn't do.'  He pushes me just the right amount, cheers me on and gives me the confidence I need to succeed.  I am so happy with the muscle definition in my arms, shoulders, and legs.  I walk up to people now and ask them to feel my triceps- don't worry- they are people I know!!  It is never easy - but it's not supposed to be.  Training with Mike is always challenging and always rewarding.  Mike will help you reach your fitness goals and be a more fit, stronger person." - Kelly Mazzola

Mike's Video of the Week - April 7, 2012

Here's a little clip of Mike's boot camp class!
Have you ever wondered what the boot camp classes are like here at the club?  Here's your chance to get a little insider information on some of the workouts they complete!  In this video, we have Kelly and Patty, and they start their workout with jumping jacks.  Mike then has them move on to knee-ups, which really aren't as much fun as you'd think they are.  After knee-ups, they switch to squat jumps with a medicine ball press.  Now keep in mind, the time of this video is an uncut 2 minutes and 40 seconds.  Boot Camp is an entire hour long.  So there is plenty more fun to come.  :-)
Mike has different regimens on different days and times of class, and this was a smaller class so he spent more time on specifics with these two (he loves the smaller classes, and he loves to make people sweat).  Some nights they head outside and run hills, other nights they are sprinting on the cardio, and some nights it's just burpees, burpees, burpees...  But in the end, every member of the class is fit and getting stronger.  And everyone here at Snap just LOVES it!!

Mike's Video of the Week - Thursday, March 22, 2012

So the other day we posted a Q&A session with Mike Josephson, one of our Certified Personal Trainers here at the club.  His answer for his favorite exercise, was "TRX Atomic Push-Ups."  So I hunted him down last night and got a little video demonstration from him for the correct form.  AND... here it is!

It's on the TRX, so [hopefully] you already know that it's going to be a KILLER core workout.  First of all, holding a perfect plank on the TRX with your feet hitched in is difficult (understatement?).  Now add the prospect of tucking your knees up to your chest and back out into a perfect plank, and it's murder.  Try doing this for 30 seconds, 3 times (15 sec. rest in between sets).  Let us know how it goes. ;-)

Also, if you'd like to use the TRX during staffed hours, just ask at the desk!  We'll be happy to let you use it!
